Three days to the gubernatorial and state Houses of Assembly elections, result sheets of four local government areas in Delta South Senatorial district have been declared missing.
However, The Guardian learnt that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the sorting and batching of sensitive electoral materials at the Asaba Office of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The exercise, which began on Monday, is being done by INEC officials and monitored by agents of political parties who are contesting the elections.
The insider, who spoke to journalists on condition of anonymity yesterday, said they discovered the missing result sheets during the sorting of sensitive materials on Monday evening.
But another source disclosed that to make amends, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Cyril Omoregbe, has reportedly worked out a strategy to make up from the remaining result sheets to cover the shortfall.
“The REC and party chairmen will have to sign and counter sign to authenticate the materials before deployment to local government areas,” he stated.
While accusing one of the rival political parties of plotting with INEC and security agencies to rig the elections, he charged stakeholders to be at alert so as to avert rigging.
The source also alleged that there were plans to militarise the state to cause fear and apprehension with a view to scaring voters from coming out to freely cast their votes.
He, however, declined to name the local governments, but confirmed that they are in the Delta South Senatorial district.
Efforts to contact Dr. Omorogbe to comment on the matter were not successful.
Meanwhile, tension is brewing in Delta State as the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, of planning to truncate the Saturday, March 9, 2019 polls.
The party alleged that Oshiomhole would disrupt the elections with thugs imported from Edo State to complement those already recruited in Delta to cause mayhem that would lead to nullification of the elections in Delta.
Director General of PDP Campaign Organisation, Funkekeme Solomon, stated this, while addressing journalists yesterday in Asaba on urgent development relating to Saturday’s elections.
He said: “We have received intelligence report that APC is bent on taking the state at all cost, as orchestrated by Oshiomhole who has perfected plans to truncate the exercise.”
But in a swift reaction, APC’s presidential spokesman in Delta State, Cairo Ojougbo said, “Mr. President has admonished all members not to engage in acts inimical to the progress of Nigeria. And we will abide by what the President has said.”
