Mohammed’s dream for FCT alive, says ex-minister

Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abba Gana, has said the vision of the late Murtala Mohammed in the creation of the FCT has not dimmed as successive administrations have kept it alive.

In his remarks yesterday in Abuja at the launch of Abuja: The Evolution and Development of the Federal Capital Territory, a book written by Dr. Jumai Ahmadu, the former minister said the FCT remained a ‘Unity Centre’ for Nigerians in line with the dream of the founding fathers.

Gana, who was the FCT Minister when Chief Olusegun Obasanjo held sway as a democratically-elected President, said: “FCT has satisfied the purpose of its creation as a Unity Centre by its founding fathers, especially in line with the 1976 vision of the late General Murtala Mohammed. It has today become a multi-ethnic, multi-religious centre for all Nigerians.

“Today, Abuja is a centre of learning with several universities, medical, business, social and entertainment facilities, including an international airport that is competitive with the best in the world.”

He called on residents to appreciate the author by buying a copy to tap from the facts and knowledge about the city.

The author, an employee of the FCT Administration, said she was informed by the desire to properly educate residents and future generation of Nigerians on the evolution and developmental strides of the FCT, having worked in the territory for the last 25 years.

Also in his remarks, Senator Philip Aduda said that the launch was timely, as it would properly brief Nigerians on the giant strides of the city.
